Tree-Walking Automata Cannot Be Determinized

Tree-walking automata are a natural sequential model for recognizing languages of finite trees. Such automata walk around the tree and may decide in the end to accept it. It is shown that deterministic tree-walking automata are weaker than nondeterministic tree-walking automata.

Weighted Tree-Walking Automata

We define weighted tree-walking automata. We show that the class of tree series recognizable by weighted tree-walking automata over a commutative semiring K is a subclass of the class of regular tree series over K. If K is not a ring, then the inclusion is strict.

Pebble Alternating Tree-Walking Automata and Their Recognizing Power

Pebble tree-walking automata with alternation were first investigated by Milo, Suciu and Vianu (2003), who showed that tree languages recognized by these devices are exactly the regular tree languages. We strengthen this by proving the same result for pebble automata with “strong pebble handling” which means that pebbles can be lifted independently of the position of the reading head and withou...

Automata, Logic, and XML

We survey some recent developments in the broad area of automata and logic which are motivated by the advent of XML. In particular, we consider unranked tree automata, tree-walking automata, and automata over infinite alphabets. We focus on their connection with logic and on questions imposed by XML.

Complementing deterministic tree-walking automata

We consider various kinds of deterministic tree-walking automata, with and without pebbles, over ranked and unranked trees. For each such kind of automata we show that there is an equivalent one which never loops. The main consequence of this result is the closure under complementation of the various types of automata we consider with a focus on the number of pebbles used in order to complement...

Complexity of Pebble Tree-Walking Automata

We consider tree-walking automata using k pebbles. The pebbles are either strong (can be lifted from anywhere) or weak (can be lifted only when the automaton is on it). For each k, we give the precise complexities of the problems of emptiness and inclusion of tree-walking automata using k pebbles.
